Tips for Supporting a friend or loved one

  • Bring meals to the house the day before chemo
  • Offer to come in and cook their menu for the week
  • Offer rides to the hospital
  • Offer to drive their kids to what they need to get to
  • Offer to go wig shopping
  • Offer to take them to tests, chemo, and other appointments
  • Send regular emails, text messages, and phone regularly (if they don’t feel like connecting, they will ignore and call back later)
  • Check in after significant appointments and tests
  • Send cards, flowers, baskets, chocolates, books, treats, and other gifts
  • Take them out for lunch
  • Bring lunch to their house (eat, stay for a short time, then leave)
  • Take them for a manicure or pedicure
  • Loan movies to watch, give TV suggestions
  • Drop by the house with dessert to share and have a short visit

Note: Don’t just say “Let me know if there is anything I can do for you or if you need help.” Chances are they will never reach out for help. Instead, say “I want to come by with lunch for us. Which day will be best?” or “I am going to drive you to your next appointment. When is it?”
